The change of the calendar is significant for a lot of reasons, even though it can get lost in the haste of November and December’s holiday season.

Below, read five essential things to do before 2023. Some are practical things to protect your financial, physical, and mental health, while others are about connection and compassion.

Money Moves

One of the best financial moves you can make at the end of the year is giving some money away. Once January 1 arrives, it’s too late for tax deductions, so get them in now. Best of all, you can feel good about doing good for a cause you care about.

If it’s an option, check to ensure you’ve maxed out your contributions to your retirement accounts, especially your 401(k). That money isn’t taxed until you withdraw, and you want the funds to accumulate interest in the meantime.

Finally, if your health plan includes a health savings account (HSA), use it up.

For Your Health

Speaking of your health, ensure you’ve used all your eligible benefits. Get new glasses or contacts and take advantage of other programs.

If you have HSA money, explore how to use it up, especially if your yearly funds expire after December 31. Some HSAs allow you to get massages, pay for a gym membership, or restock your first aid kit.

Do Something New

Even if you’ve packed your year with exciting experiences, there’s always room for one more. Science has proven that trying new things is good for your physical and mental well-being and can even improve your life expectancy.

Think about what you want to cultivate in 2023, and do something along those lines. It will help get you jazzed for the new year.

It’s also worth mentioning that tradition is just as critical, especially around the holidays. Don’t forget to prioritize your family’s favorite traditions, even when life is busy.

Review and Reset Goals

The new year is a time to look ahead and back. Think about how you felt in January and review what you wanted to accomplish. How did you do?

Don’t be drawn into self-criticism; be curious instead. If you didn’t meet your goals, what got in the way? Perhaps they weren’t appropriate for you in the first place, or you faced unexpected obstacles. It’s all information you can use to inform your vision for 2023.

Celebrate Your Wins

At the same time, it’s just as important to recognize and celebrate the things that went well. If you accomplished what you set out to do, that’s amazing! You deserve to shout it from the rooftops, but at least pat yourself on the back.

The end of the year is also a terrific time to practice gratitude, both individually and within your communities. Spend time in self-reflection, dwelling on your good fortunes. Don’t forget to acknowledge all the work you do to cultivate those blessings. Do the same with your family, circles of friends, colleagues, and other groups.

If you follow these five simple tips, you’ll set yourself up for a fun and fulfilling 2023!
