This Halloween season, Chipotle has partnered with Spirit Halloween to launch its first-ever costume collection. And yes, it’s as weird as it sounds. The collaboration taps into viral internet humor and Chipotle’s playful social media presence, offering fans a fun way to embody their favorite Chipotle-related item.
The Inspiration Behind Chipotle Costumes
Several years ago, social media users started creating their own costume ideas and presenting them as if they were real Spirit Halloween items. Chipotle jumped on the bandwagon with a fork costume post two years ago, followed up by a costume concept for a napkin last year, and now a full costume lineup has been announced.
The Costumes
There are five costumes Chipotle fans can choose from and we can just imagine showing up with a group wearing the full lineup. The costumes retail at $39.99 each and come in adult sizes small to XL making them accessible for fans who want to enjoy the fun and quirky side of Chipotle’s online persona.
Chipotle Burrito
This wraparound costume mimics the famous Chipotle burrito, complete with foil and a label featuring the ingredients. Note: it does not come with an actual burrito. Womp womp.
“Our popular Halloween tradition, Boorito, began with a burrito-themed costume contest and now we’re taking it to the next level with the launch of our first-ever costume collection in collaboration,” said Chris Brandt, Chipotle’s Chief Brand Officer in a press release.
Brandt noted that a special Boorito offer will be coming in October as well.
Chipotle To-Go Bag
A full-body costume designed like a Chipotle to-go paper bag, letting wearers embody that post-burrito satisfaction. Just like the authentic Chipotle bag, the costume features brown and red word art up the sides – think of it as tattoos about your favorite food without the commitment.
Chipotle Fork
A larger-than-life black fork costume, playfully referencing the original costume idea Chipotle posted in 2022. Just remember, you’ll have to hold your arms at the correct angle to get that full-on fork look.
Chipotle Napkin
A funny take on the endless pile of napkins people tend to grab in-store. This simple brown body suit includes the Chipotle logo emblazoned on the chest. Just make sure to watch out if someone spills their drink and wants you to come to the rescue.
Chipotle Water Cup
A nod to the well-known “hack” where people order a water cup but sneak lemonade instead, this costume captures the humor of real-life Chipotle experiences. The white body suit features brown writing and wave designs just like the real thing. If you do a group costume, this one is perfect for your designated driver.
Chipotle’s Playful Relationship with Meme Culture
Over the years, Chipotle has successfully merged its brand identity with internet meme culture. Whether it’s customer stories about overflowing burritos or light-hearted jabs at common in-store mishaps, Chipotle’s social media strategy has always included plenty of humour. In 2023, for instance, Chipotle released a lemonade-scented water cup candle, referencing the meme about customers “sneaking” lemonade instead of water.
The new Halloween collection continues this tradition of self-aware, internet-driven humor. Instead of taking itself too seriously, Chipotle has always leaned into the meme-worthy moments shared by its customers, capitalizing on the relatability of everyday experiences. This approach helps the brand stay relevant with younger audiences who are always on the lookout for the next viral trend.
