Are you excited about Halloween but also need to figure out what you will dress up as?

Halloween is a fun, comical, and intriguing holiday that people celebrate in many ways — parties, trick-or-treating, watching scary movies, etc.

But one aspect of the holiday that many people share is dressing up! And another common trend is waiting too long to figure out what you want to wear, then spending too much money on a pre-made costume at the costume store.

To avoid this situation for yet another year, why not gather some everyday home items and create one of the following DIY Halloween costumes that cost little or no money?

Here are our eight best suggestions that are appropriate for various age groups.

1. Ceiling Fan

A ceiling Fan is a simple, punny costume in which you write “Go, Ceiling, Go!” with black marker on a white or light-colored shirt. In turn, you are a fan of the ceiling or a “ceiling fan.”

You can take this costume a step further by carrying cheerleader pom-poms, wearing a baseball cap, or sporting a “Number 1” hand glove.

2. Two-Face and Batman

This costume is excellent for a couple or partners!

To become Two-Face, one person will dress up as Harvey Dent, Gotham’s assistant district attorney.

For the “Two-Face” costume, you will need a white button-down shirt, black pants, a black tie, and a silver or white spray-painted half-mask. If you are skilled in face paint, you can also paint the other “damaged” side of the “Two-Face” character on your skin.

Meanwhile, the other person will dress as Batman (or Batgirl) by wearing a black cape, bat mask, and black clothing.

3. Rosie the Riveter

Rosie is an excellent choice for those ladies who want to show their strength!

To become Rosie the Riveter, wear a red and white polka dot bandana and a denim shirt, and get ready to flex those muscles. It’s as simple and easy as that.

4. Jelly Beans

Dressing up as a jelly bean bag is a comical, colorful, and fun choice for both kids and adults.

To create a jelly bean costume, you will need a large clear trash bag, different colored felt pieces, glue, and scissors. Cut the felt into different bean shapes, then glue them onto the trash bag.

Make sure to leave a hole at the top of the bag so you can see, and voila! You’re a human jelly bean bag.

You can also create or print out the Jelly Bean logo to make the costume more obvious.

5. Fried Egg and Spatula

Another great couple or partner costume that’s simple to create on your own is an egg and a spatula. The whole outfit only consists of three colors, white, yellow, and black.

The person going as the fried egg will need to cut out a piece of white cardboard to look like the outer edges of a cracked egg. For the yolk part, try using a yellow beach ball or a small, round yellow pillow (or a pillow you’re comfortable painting yellow).

Meanwhile, the spatula can be made of black cardboard, or you can even use a real spatula and attach it to your forehead!

6. Mime

Dressing up as a mime grants you the perfect opportunity to break out all the all-black clothing you never get to wear.

To become a mime, you will need black pants, white and black face paint, black or red suspenders, and a striped black and white shirt.

To increase the appeal of the costume, getting inexpensive white gloves and a black French beret wouldn’t hurt either.

7. Awkward Yearbook Photo

Are you embarrassed by your middle school yearbook photo? Why not see the comedy in it and use it as inspiration for your Halloween costume?

You don’t have to find the exact shirt you were sporting in the pic, but wear something similar to what you wouldn’t wear. Throw on some glasses, fake braces, an outdated hairstyle, or whatever else makes sense to you.

Then, paint or paste a 90’s yearbook print backdrop.

8. Night and Day

This idea is a great last-minute partner costume for both kids and adults. It also allows you to get extra creative!

One person will dress up as their interpretation of night, perhaps sporting black clothing, star-shaped jewelry, and smokey eye makeup.

Meanwhile, the other person will dress as the day by wearing bright colors, sunshine-themed items, and perhaps a flower headband.
